Ashis Manna

Artist

Ashis was born on 23rd Dec 1971 in Kolkata, India.

His life has been a unique combination of science, technology and art. He took up the profession of structural engineering in the oil and gas industry after graduating and post-graduating in engineering from premier academic institutions in India. He along with family has travelled, worked and lived in various places in the world like India, the Middle East, South East Asia and London. However, he remains passionate about creating artworks using watercolour. Self-reading of artist magazines and internet resources has been his source of self-education in art.

Being a self-taught artist, he believes an artist needs to think and evolve continuously and unceasingly to create appealing artworks. Visualization of various subjects in a mood of story- telling has been his artistic style. He conceptualizes his paintings with an impressionistic manner in landscapes, human portraits, figure and floral works. He also endeavours to infuse abstractism in his works.
He is a true believer in the endless possibilities with watercolour. This interesting process is the part that he always enjoys while working with watercolours.

Among many renowned artists, he gets immense inspiration from the works of Joseph Zbukvic, Samir Mondal, John Singer Sargent, Edgar Whitney, John Yardley, Alvaro Castagnet, Milind Mullick, David Taylor and many more.

Artist statement

“The fluidity of the watercolor medium has been fascinating. The uncertainty of the medium often provides splendid variations. The medium commands respect from the painters and compensates that off with rewarding results.

Watercolor is a very basic yet intriguing medium to create artworks. A good watercolour painting has an immense potential to swing and elevate the mood of the viewers towards the brighter and positive side of life.”
